The Apple Tablet

So today is the big day, to be precise 1800 GMT is the exact time live coverage from blogs all over the planet will begin to cover the announcement from Apples ‘Latest Creation’ Event.  It has been speculated about now for weeks that this announcement will indeed be about the long awaited Apple Tablet. The device which even before its announcement is already being called the savour to printed material and is rumoured to do to printed material what the iPod did to the MP3.
Over the past few days there have been numerous leaked photographs of the Apple Tablet and the CEO of McGraw-Hill announced live on the American news channel CNBC yesterday that Apple would be releasing an iTablet or iState or whatever it is called today and that MCGraw-Hill will be publishing the ebooks on to the platform (Stealing Apple’s thunder just a bit!). He also confirmed that this device will run a version of the iPhone OS. A few weeks ago the CEO of Orange also confirmed they would be selling it so it is widely accepted it will have a permanent connection to the internet through 3G similar to the iPhone.

Other feature’s it is expected to have is a Proximity sensor on the touchscreen which could avoid getting mucky fingerprints over your potentially £1000e-book reader. As coincidently the US Patent office released a list of 7 patents approved by them (which Apple applied for) today just a few hours before the product launch, one of which being a proxmity sensing touch screen.

At DSM were hugely excited about the launch of this tablet! We are very excited to see where this will help the industry or provide new opportunities. Anything Apple releases revolutionises the market it enters or just creates a new market, and the products nearly always succeed. Where will this tablet push the web to next? And what new opportunities does it open for web design. No doubt another version of Safari us designers will have to support which will provide us with some more challenges!

Well to find out were all going to have to wait a few hours to see what it is and how It is going to “change our lives”. We will post up a post tomorrow on the confirmed specification and possible implications for the web.
