Experiential Marketing Stunt for the World Creative Imaging Competition

Three videos were uploaded to YouTube 4 months ago; one in particular became flavour of the week in a fair few marketing blogs. The video in question is the “Amazing blue shipping container camera!” which notched up nearly 183,000 views on YouTube, plus Kudos a plenty from fellow experiential marketers.

The “Amazing blue shipping container camera!” begins with people crowded around a giant shipping container shaped like a camera. A group of people read instructions and take a photo with the giant camera by jumping on its huge button! The giant camera flashes, the camera pans to see the just taken photo on a giant bill board on top of a nearby building, all watching pull out their phones and take a picture of the picture.

There some aspects of the clips seem a little too pre-meditated, making them seem somewhat false, yet the videos are still entertaining, so this is slightly forgiven!

The videos were added to YouTube by “cr8yourworld”, when you check out their channel there are two other videos that are quite similar “The World’s largest popcorn machine made” and “Helicopter made using a blue shipping container”, yet neither had the online notoriety as the giant camera clip.

After viewing the videos my first reaction was to attempt to find out as much as I could about who created them, when you use the link on the YouTube channel it appears you’re going to http://www.cr8yourworld.com , however you are quickly re-directed to the World Creative Imaging Competition

The videos were a stunt for the World Creative Imaging Competition from Samsung to promote their new NX10 camera. The idea of the competition had 120 young people from 6 countries taking 3 photos in a matter of days; their theme was “The Creative Moment”.

The stunt/stealth/experiential marketing nature of the videos aside, the clips are appealing to watch for anyone, giving them the opportunity to become viral goliaths with the right amount of exposure, unfortunately it appears although they have seen much exposure, they have not seen enough to make them the international viral hit they could have been.

Here are the YouTube clips of each video…
