Man to Send Android Phone Into Space!? Astdroid Begins…

When we first heard about a guy sending an Android smartphone into space, we thought the same as you… Ahem… WHY?

Well, the idea hailed ‘The Astdroid Project’ is the brainchild of Danny Pier, a 25 year-old self-proclaimed computer geek.  Pier is positive he can fit a HTC Evo smartphone to a weather balloon, using its camera, computing power, transmitter and GPS technology to follow the phone’s expedition into space.Android LogoPier used Kickstarter, a website that claims to offer ‘A New Way to Fund & Follow Creativity’ to raise $2,052 from 66 different backers to fund the project. The funds generated through Kickstarter will be used to finance the expense of the helium, weather balloons, parachutes and other provisions needed for the journey spaceward!

Pier will also be writing an application for the smartphone that will take videos and photos of its expedition as well as transmitting the location of the phone for tracking.

The ultimate goal of Astdroid is to prove anybody can send a smartphone into space, capturing the journey along the way and getting the handset back on its return to Earth. Pier will be documenting his findingds, successes and failures along the way using social media. Pier is hoping that his actions will encourage others to do the same.
