Some interesting facts about Twitter

The guys at Barracuda Labs had some pretty interesting stats regarding how people are using Twitter in their research findings in the Barracuda Labs 2009 Annual Report.

Did You Know…

Although people are increasingly active on Twitter, only 21% of Twitter users have 10 or more followers, followers 10 or more people and have tweeted at least 10 or more times. That’s a staggeringly low number considering the perceived popularity of Twitter. It would appear that many people ‘try’ Twitter and decide it’s not for them and abandon the account.

17% of the people on Twitter have 0 followers – This might seem pretty poor, but when you consider the number was 30% in June 2009, that isn’t half bad! The amount of people with 0 followers has nearly halved in the space of a year.

There has been a 30% increase in Twitter users with over 10 followers in the last year.

In June 2009 37.1% of Twitter users were yet to tweet, today 34% of users are at the 0 tweets mark, a drop in numbers sure, but a fairly small one. This again is most likely to people setting up an account and leaving it due to lack of interest or cold feet etc.

Currently 73% of Twitter users have tweeted less than 10 times, percentage has decreased since June 2009 when it was at 79% leading us all to believe users are becoming more active, even if it’s not by a landslide.

What’s also interesting is the correlation between tweets and followers, Barracuda Labs have shown that people with an average of 1000 followers tweet most often in comparison to those with less than 100 or more than 100,000 followers.
