GAP logo redesign [FAIL]

Some brands out there, like GAP, are simply iconic. You recognise them wherever you go and you buy into them for the experience and the quality of the product. For over 20 years GAP has been rocking the simple yet classy navy blue square with a stylish font exclaiming ‘GAP’. Up until now this has been a great success, recognised by millions and respected by more.

We understand the need to update and become modernised in a modern market, we really do…but why is it when a major brand decides to re-design their logo they usually end up with a load of crap? Like most we weren’t overly impressed with the London 2012 logo but I beleive that GAP has just taken it one step further in presenting their new logo design.

I could jibber on for ages about branding and consequences but that’s not quite the purpose of this blog post, I want the images to do the talking for me. So without further adue let me introduce the new GAP logo, et voila:

GAP Logo

On the left is the old iconic logo and on the right is the new poop logo*.

It would seem that there is an army of graphic designers out there that have similar opimions as well. So much so that the guys on iso50.com have set up a GAP logo redesign competition.

The brief for the logo redesign

Your Job: Design a new logo for the Gap. Assume a fairly open brief and think about where their brand is and where it’s going.

Timeframe: 1 week. Contest ends on Wednesday October 13th. Short yes, but this isn’t school, let’s work quick.

First Place: Your choice of giclee print from the ISO50 shop (size 24 x 36), a shirt of your choice (also from the shop), and a process feature article here on ISO50 (If you choose to, you can write a process piece on how you developed the winning design, which we’ll post here on the blog).

Two Runners Up: Two shirts of choice from the ISO50 shop.

Instructions: Email alex [@ symbol] iso50.com with the subject line “New Gap Logo” and attach your redesigned Gap logo. Please make sure your file is in JPEG or PNG format and clearly displays your logo. Size 450w x 250h pixels please. Center the logo, make it look nice. Limit two entries per person.

Due to the extremely high volume of submissions, entries may not be posted right away, but we’ll do our best to get them all up before the 12th!

Voting: Winners will be determined by a popular vote after the last submission date on a separate post. Who knows, maybe if it’s good enough Gap will notice :)
